Edo Era Geisha House
Kyoto, Kyoto 602-0865
Heritage Homes are proud to be able to offer one of Kyoto's most important historical houses for sale for the first time in 4 generations.
This riverfront Geisha house, one of 4 built side by side next to the Marutamachi Bridge by the Imperial Palace in the year 1800, was owned by Kumatsu (1843-1886). For several decades she was Kyoto’s most famous Geisha.
Here, she would perform tea ceremonies, play music, recite poetry and serve food and sake for the great and the good of Kyoto, including Kogoro Katsura and Sakamoto Ryoma, who would hold secret meetings here to conspire to overthrow the Tokugawa Shoguns from power.
Many of the original features, including a painting of Kumatsu and the secret escape tunnel leading out to the river, are still in situ.
When carefully restored by Heritage Homes’ expert team of Miyadaiku temple restorers, this will become a totally unique home in an incredible setting.
