A 19th century timber barn is available for customised conversion by Heritage Homes Japan.

We bought a barn!

Heritage Homes Japan found this 19th century timber barn with over 350 sqm of floorspace in a remote area of eastern Hokkaido, south of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Well-preserved timber barns are now incredibly rate in Japan as most of them were replaced with iron/steel constructions in the 1950s.

Built in the Scandinavian / North American style rather than a Japanese farmhouse style, this barn has huge open spaces and is easy to reconfigure after it is dismantled.

Massive, load-bearing beams and vast open spaces enable you to create an elegant, contemporary home whilst retaining the warmth and character of a genuine 19th century barn.

I want this barn - what happens now?

In Spring 2023 the barn will be dismantled and taken to the Heritage Homes workshop where the restoration and reconfiguration of the timber is done. At the same time, Heritage Homes' architect will work with you to create the layout of the barn as well as choosing fixtures and fittings.

Heritage Homes is one of the few builders in Japan that exceeds EU standards for sustainability, insulation, energy efficiency and a minimal carbon footprint. Triple glazing, hemp & wool insulation are standard and rather than kerosene they use a variety of modern technologies including heat-exchange pumps and solar energy depending on the location of the project.

The final design is up to you! Heritate Homes pride themselves on customised projects, not cookie-cutter homes. Each building restoration is different from any other. Heritage Homes have their own in-house architect and design team, so together you can create a home that you and your family will cherish over the generations.
