Madarao’s new pass partnership gives international visitors another reason to explore northern Nagano, with potential benefits for local accommodation businesses.
Madarao Mountain Resort in northern Nagano will join Ikon Pass for winter 2026/27, giving holders of the international ski pass another reason to include the area in their Japan plans. Announced on 10 September, the partnership brings Madarao into a network that already includes several resorts across Nagano and neighbouring Niigata.
Full Ikon Pass holders will receive seven days at Madarao, while Ikon Base Pass holders will receive five, with no blackout dates applying to either allocation. The new access does not extend to the Ikon Session Pass, an important distinction for visitors checking whether their existing pass covers a trip.
Madarao’s appeal is closely tied to its ungroomed terrain and tree skiing. The resort has 32 courses, with around 60% left ungroomed, while Ikon highlights 12 official tree-ski courses in its destination guide. Groomed runs and English-language ski schools also provide options for visitors whose interests extend beyond powder, making the mountain relevant to groups with different levels of experience.
Access through Iiyama gives overseas visitors a practical route from Tokyo without a domestic flight. Ikon’s guide puts the Shinkansen journey at around 110 minutes, followed by roughly half an hour by bus or car to Madarao. Travellers will still need to allow for connections and winter road conditions when planning their arrival, particularly if they are transferring from an international airport.
The addition also creates more choice for a holiday taking in several mountains. Myoko Suginohara, Arai and Shiga Kogen already participate in Ikon, allowing pass holders to consider Madarao alongside other destinations in the wider region. Choosing where to stay will still depend on the journey between resorts and the experience visitors want outside skiing, even when lift access is covered by the same pass.
Madarao joins alongside Beidahu Ski Resort and Lake Songhua Resort in China, taking Ikon’s Asian network to 14 destinations. For Japan, the expansion offers another route through which overseas skiers can discover a resort while researching a pass they already own, potentially influencing where they spend part of a longer winter holiday.
For local accommodation businesses, that could create opportunities to reach guests who had previously concentrated on better-known Japanese destinations. Clear information about station transfers and access from a particular lodge to the lifts may help turn that initial interest into a workable booking, especially for visitors arranging their first stay in the area.
The property implications will take longer to assess, because the announcement provides no evidence of increased bookings or buyer enquiries. Those are the measures to watch as winter approaches; for now, Madarao has gained a new way to reach international visitors, with the effect on local demand still to emerge.
