The recent report of 17.7 million tourists in the first half of 2024 has spurred the Japanese government to enhance Japan's tourism. To sustain this growth, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and ministry heads have proposed the development of luxury resorts in all of Japan's 35 national parks. This initiative is expected to increase tourism traffic in other parts of Japan and bring about a host of potential benefits for the economy and local communities.
To compete with Japan's metropolitan cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, the government wishes to promote other places in Japan, highlighting their natural beauty and tranquillity. These national parks include the Minami Alps National Park, which spans Nagano, Shizuoka, and Yamanashi prefectures, and the Yakushima National Park in Kagoshima Prefecture.
According to Fumio Kishida and the Cabinet, with the current weakening of the yen, many foreign tourists will be willing to pay for luxuries while travelling in Japan. Japan's favourable foreign exchange rate allows more tourists to explore tourist destinations.
Despite the inbound tourists and the potential development of luxury lodging, its operations may need improvement when the average real wages for Japanese residents have continuously decreased in the past few years. It is worth mentioning that luxury resorts are a familiar concept in Japan. Relaxing in the countryside and unwinding in hotels with hot spring baths has been a great appeal to both residents and tourists in Japan.
On the other hand, national parks in Japan are usually open for day trips, with many visitors staying in inns or hotels rather than camping within the area.
Nonetheless, Kishida has pushed the investment and development of new luxury resorts by 2031, the 100th anniversary of forming Japan's national park system.
