Japan achieved a new milestone in the first half of 2025, welcoming a record 21.5 million visitors nationwide. This figure, reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization, represents an increase of more than 3.7 million tourists compared to the previous year.
Japan's tourism sector has experienced consistent growth, both before and since the pandemic. This expansion is further fueled by the ongoing depreciation of the yen, which makes the country an attractive and affordable destination for a diverse range of international visitors. The normalization of border policies, initiated in October 2022, has also contributed to this upward trend.
Japan has achieved a new record for tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025, with no month last year seeing fewer than 3.2 million visitors. China contributed nearly 20% of these tourists, with over 797,900 travelers in June alone, indicating a recovery in Chinese tourism despite economic challenges in 2023. June also saw significant monthly visitor numbers from the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, among others.
This sustained increase in tourism, even with a weak yen, underscores Japan's economic resilience. It also drives an increasing need for infrastructure development and investment in resort real estate.
