Hilton Takayama Resort opened on 14 September 2026, bringing the international hotel brand to one of central Japan’s best-known historic destinations. The former Hotel Associa Takayama Resort is reopening in stages following refurbishment, with 91 rooms available initially and the full 283-room property expected to be ready by spring 2027.
The opening marks Hilton’s first entry into Gifu Prefecture, under an agreement with the JR Central Group. JR Tokai Hotels continues to operate the property, combining its experience in Takayama with Hilton’s international brand and booking network. For a destination known for its preserved streets, traditional crafts and regional food, the partnership offers another route to reaching overseas visitors.
Set on a wooded hill at an elevation of 640 metres, the resort looks towards the Northern Alps, with mountain views from every guest room. Its setting offers a quieter base outside the historic centre, where the landscape is as much a part of the stay as the town itself.
The refurbishment draws on local craftsmanship, with interiors inspired by Hida furniture, traditional sashiko stitching and Takayama’s festivals. Most rooms measure either 35 or 46 square metres, alongside five suites. Facilities include a new executive lounge, four dining and bar venues, and natural hot-spring baths with views towards the mountains. Private onsen rooms are also available, while a free shuttle connects the hotel with JR Takayama Station in approximately eight minutes.
For Uchi, the interesting aspect is the investment in an established regional hotel and its introduction to a wider international audience. The project takes an existing property, retains an experienced local operator and adds refurbished accommodation alongside a globally recognised name. Our view is that this combination could help Takayama compete for travellers who want the character of a regional Japanese destination with the familiarity of an international hotel brand.
The coming months will bring the remaining rooms into operation as refurbishment progresses. For visitors planning a trip through the Hida region, Hilton Takayama Resort adds a newly refreshed mountain-view option, with the completed resort expected to follow in spring 2027.
