From flat and beginner routes to challenging mountain tracks, Hokkaido offers a diverse range of routes, each promising a unique adventure for every cyclist. So, gear up, grab your helmet, and hit the road to explore the exhilarating variety of bike routes this summer.
Lake Toya loop
Many cyclists visit this route for the breathtaking view of the mountain peaks reflected in the lake's still waters and the panoramic views from different perspectives. The route takes four hours to complete; however, if you wish to have shorter routes, you can visit the Toya to Sobetsu for a maximum of two hours.
Akan
While some riders enjoy spending an entire day along Hokkaido's highways, some cyclists prefer exploring various sites in one area. You can witness birdwatching sites, rivers, and mountains from Kushiro to Lake Akan. You can also take the popular Lake Akan to Lake Kussharo route, which ranges from easy to strenuous. It takes five to six hours to finish the over 66-kilometre route, so be sure to hydrate and prepare for challenging routes.
Furano to Biei
Witness the changing seasons when visiting the serene towns of Furano and Biei, with breathtaking scenery of lavender, poppies, and sunflowers. If you're looking for a challenge, take a side trip to Biei and visit Lake Takisato, which has crystal-clear water and surrounding greenery.
Rishiri Island
Explore the various loops around its coastline while viewing the natural charms of cliffs leading to crystal waters and Mount Rishiri at the island's centre.
Shibetsu station to Lake Shumarinai
One of the popular routes is exploring the wonder of Lake Shumarinai, a vast body of water dotted with small islands. You can visit the natural wildflowers and some man-made attractions like log cabins and the largest man-made lake in Japan. Start from the Shibetsu station and ride to the observation deck at the lake.
Hanazono hill climb
Are you ready for a challenge? Gear up and take the Hanazono Hill Climb, a thrilling race up a hill while witnessing the picturesque sights of the Niseko area, including Mount Yotei, the rocky scenery of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the whiskey-producing areas near Yoichi, and Lake Shikotsu. This route is for hardcore cyclists who are ready to test their limits.
Kimuaneppu Cape to Lake Notoro
Many cyclists start from the Kimuaneppu Cape or its nearby campground and ride towards the coastline of Lake Notoro. This route features fantastic views over Lake Saroma down the coastline to Lake Notaro, Hokkaido's famous colourful coral grass. You can take this route in early autumn, when the grass is most colourful, and celebrate at the Notoroko Sangoso festival afterward.
Kutchan and Yotei loop
From Kutchan Station, many cyclists take a large loop around Mt. Yotei. This route takes cyclists through some of the area's scenic landscapes, including colourful marshes and lavender fields. Some loops can be extended with a visit to Hirafu or the Milk Kobo to see breathtaking mountain views and dairy farming. Moreover, many cyclists follow the Hinode area to the Yumoto Hot Spring, Shinsen Numa Marsh, and back to Kutchan.
Every June, Niseko hosts the Niseko Classic Bike Race, which attracts competitors from around the globe. This highly anticipated event is set to thrill riders even more in 2026 as it has been selected as the host race for the UCI Masters World Championships.
Niseko Twin Peaks Bike Park
Inspired and supported by the local community, this new bike park in Hirafu opened in 2023 and has been adding more and more trails ever since. The Twin Peaks Bike Park in Niseko, Japan is a world-class mountain biking destination designed in collaboration with renowned trail building company Allegra of Switzerland. The bike park offers free access to the public, and trails for all ages and abilities.
