Japan’s 2025 foliage forecast map is here! Witnessing the koyo—or autumn foliage display—has always been a popular activity in Japan and just as iconic as spring’s cherry blossom season. Each year, travellers witness Japan’s landscapes transforming into majestic shades of red and gold. From mid-September to late November, koyo regions appear from the northernmost island of Hokkaido all the way down to the southern areas of Fukuoka. Sometimes, areas like Tokyo and Kyoto continue to display autumn foliage until December.
According to the Japan Meteorological Corporation, the official autumn leaves forecast predicts a slightly later arrival of autumn foliage this year due to lingering summer heat. Koyo season is classified by red momiji (maple) leaves and yellow ginkgo leaves. Keen to embrace the season? Here’s when and where you can expect to see the best of Japan’s fall foliage.
