This Japanese Ski Resort Is Poised to Become A Worldwide Health And Longevity Hub

Kamui ski links

Kamui Ski Links has traditionally enticed winter sport enthusiasts with its pristine, powdery snow and quiet slopes. However this resort might soon be attracting a new breed of visitor seeking more than just alpine thrills—those interested in enhancing their health and extending their longevity, according to Asian skiing infohub Ski Asia.

Central to this emerging vision is the Akasha Sanctuary, a forthcoming regenerative medicine and wellness centre, integral to Kamui's ambitious redevelopment efforts. While Akasha is still under construction, its pioneering principles are already evident through Gota Miura’s anti-ageing ski program at Miura Snowsports. Miura, an Olympian skier known for guiding his 80-year-old father, Yuichiro Miura, to the summit of Everest, combines on-slope skiing with educational sessions on health, longevity, and decelerating the ageing process.

Presently, this program offers a glimpse into a transformative future. According to Grant Abbott, a partner in the Akasha initiative, the overarching goal is profound.

“Wellness retreats make you feel good, but this fixes biological issues," says Abbott. "For example, Shirazawa has protocols for gluten intolerance, COVID vaccine side effects, testosterone and hormone regeneration, and even early autism interventions.”

Abbott further explains its synergy with the skiing environment:

“It’s perfect. Many skiers blow out their knees or have cartilage issues – this therapy addresses those problems. We’ll have 7, 14 and 21 day programs. People can ski and do activities while getting the medical side done efficiently. It’s advanced science meets skiing.”

Dr. Takuji Shirasawa, a leading anti-aging expert in Japan, is a pivotal figure at the Sanctuary. With a PhD in Immunology, Shirasawa has dedicated over 30 years to exploring the molecular genetics of aging, Alzheimer’s, and stem-cell therapies. He heads the Shirasawa Anti-Ageing Medical Research Institute and the Ochanomizu Longevity Clinic in Tokyo, and is Japan’s most prolific anti-ageing author, with over 300 books and numerous media engagements.

Abbott elaborates on Shirasawa’s innovative approach:

“Dr. Shirosawa is bringing his unique testing and 3D body functional forensic review to Akasha covering brain, organs, and bloodwork. Something out of sci-fi and a must for everyone to see the state of their current body and brain health.”

“The theory here isn’t just slowing ageing, it’s reversing it, potentially 10 to 15 years or more. This approach helps skiers and all sports enthusiasts get back to their prime, as well as executives and business owners suffering degeneration of the hypothalamus from stress, to reclaim executive functions. It’s remarkable.”

Hokkaido provides an idyllic setting for this vision. The region's pristine air, rich forests, mountainous landscapes, and proximity to natural hot springs create an optimal wellness environment. Coupled with Japan’s esteemed reputation for longevity, this locale serves as a natural laboratory for refining the Sanctuary's therapies.

Although still under construction, Akasha’s potential impact is vast, promises Abbott. Once operational, it will provide tailored regenerative medicine programs with stem-cell therapies, rejuvenation treatments, and cutting-edge diagnostics—all customised for each individual. Visitors will immerse themselves in a lifestyle promoting longevity and wellness, amid Japan’s breathtaking winter scenery.

Currently, Miura’s anti-ageing ski program introduces guests to the foundational philosophy and vision of Kamui’s future. With Shirasawa’s extensive research and Abbott’s commitment to its realization in Hokkaido, the resort is set to redefine ski tourism—a place where adventure intertwines with health and longevity.

Japan is renowned for its snow, hospitality, and longevity. Should Akasha succeed, Kamui might offer something even more unique: a destination where one can ski through nature while investing in their health's future. Stay tuned.
