We look at the plans and the town, ski areas and summer countryside that visitors will find around it. Furano’s long-awaited Westin hotel is now scheduled to open in summer 2029, following an announcement by Marriott International, Sekisui House and Pacifica Hotels on 2 September. The 195-room project adds another international hotel name to central Hokkaido, where visitors can combine a ski holiday with time in a working agricultural town, or return in summer for a very different stay. Uchi first reported on the development in March 2025, when an opening in 2026 was being reported. The latest announcement provides the timetable to use for future travel plans and a useful opportunity to revisit the setting. Furano already has an established ski resort and a summer tourism industry, so a new hotel is joining a destination with plenty of reasons to visit throughout the year. Sekisui House will be the developer, with Pacifica Hotels operating the property under Marriott’s Westin brand. Planned facilities include restaurants, a café and bakery, alongside a spa, fitness facilities and a large communal bath. Event space is also proposed, giving the hotel scope to accommodate gatherings as well as individual holidays. Visitors arriving for winter will find a mountain divided into the Furano and Kitanomine zones, which Prince Hotels describes as having 28 trails between them. The two sides connect on the mountain, although choosing where to stay still affects the start and finish of each day. Kitanomine has its own gondola and a surrounding accommodation neighbourhood, while the Furano side is served by the large ropeway near Shin Furano Prince Hotel. A map is particularly useful when comparing hotels or properties that all carry the Furano name. The town centre adds another option for people who want to spend longer in the area. Furano Tourism Association puts the Kitanomine gondola and hotel neighbourhood roughly ten minutes from the station by car, with local buses also serving the area. That separation allows a holiday to include time in town without treating the mountain as a remote excursion, although winter transport arrangements still deserve attention. A ten-minute drive on a map and an easy walk home after dinner are quite different kinds of convenience. Summer brings an itinerary that extends well beyond the ski area. The tourism association lists flower gardens across Furano and its neighbouring municipalities, including Farm Tomita in Nakafurano and the gardens and farmland around Biei. Furano itself has the winery and cheese factory, while Furano Marche offers a place to browse local produce and food in town. Travellers who have only seen the region under snow may be surprised by how much of a summer visit takes place among farms and fields, with the mountains forming the background. That wider geography is part of the appeal for a second-home owner, because choosing an address also means choosing how to spend time here. Kitanomine suits people who expect skiing to organise much of their winter day, while central Furano offers access to everyday shops and services. Rural properties introduce another possibility, with more space and a stronger connection to the countryside, although journeys, snow clearance and the upkeep of an empty house become more prominent considerations. Two homes advertised in Furano can therefore support quite different routines. The accommodation available to buyers is also becoming more varied. Uchi’s listings include resort apartments alongside houses and land, while developments such as Lyra by Nozo bring a smaller residential format to Kitanomine. Lyra comprises 20 residences beside Nozo Hotel, with shared access to a range of hotel facilities. For someone comparing a managed apartment with a standalone house, those differences in space, services and responsibility are likely to be more useful than treating every new project as part of a single luxury category. Our view is that Furano is most interesting when considered on its own terms: a regional town with a ski mountain close by and an agricultural hinterland that gives summer a separate identity. Anyone considering a future home here would learn a great deal from visiting in both seasons, comparing the neighbourhood around the lifts with the town centre and making time for the countryside beyond. The same address can feel very different in February and July, and that is something a hotel announcement can only begin to explain.
