![Noa hakobune06 lead](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_480x270_crop_center-center_60_line/noa_hakobune06_lead.jpg)Sapporo—the capital of Hokkaido—is famous for being one of the snowiest places on the planet, but it also offers a smorgasbord of incredibly unique and delicious dining-out experiences.

From a Michelin-starred sushi joint and all-you-can eat barbecue in the home of world-renowned Sapporo Beer, to a spot that doubles as a (non-floating version of) Noah's ark and an entire alleyway dedicated to ramen, here are 10 of [Sapporo](https://uchijapan.com/news/sapporo-neighbourhood-guide)'s best restaurants.

## Moliere

![Moliere](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/Moliere.jpg) Image: Michelin-worthy cuisine awaits at Moliere / Moliere [Moliere](https://sapporo-moliere.com/) earned multiple stars from Michelin before the programme pulled out of Hokkaido in 2017. That should be reason enough to get you through the door here, where we're pleased to report the food is as impressive today as it's ever been. Chef/owner Hiroshi Nakamichi—who as a young man travelled to France to train—will treat you to an exquisite French feast, prepared with the finest provincial ingredients (think sweetbreads, dauphinoise, and beef fillet). Combined with its elegant European-style dining room overlooking the picturesque scenery of Maruyama Park, Moliere is without a doubt one of the best dining experiences in Sapporo—Michelin star or no.

## Aki Nagao

![Akinagao sapporo](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/akinagao_sapporo.jpg) Image: An incredible degustation experience awaits at Aki Nagao / @akinagao\_sapporo [Aki Nagao](http://www.aki-nagao.com/)'s blue-cube exterior belies the European fit-out within—think exposed brick walls, adorned with paintings like Da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine. This gives you a very obvious clue as to the type of cuisine that's served here: French, but with a Hokkaido twist. Such cuisine has earned this restaurant Michelin-star status, and involves chef/owner Akihiro Nagao channeling his traditional French training into just one incredible degustation, each season. This means you're unlikely to have the same meal here twice, however we can tell you that Akihiro is known for his frequent and delicious use of oysters. This spot is also lauded for its excellent wine pairings and that, we must say, is very French indeed.

## Sapporo Beer Garden

![Sapporo beer garden visit Sapporo](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/sapporo_beer_garden_visit_Sapporo.jpg) Image: Inside the Sapporo Beer Garden / Visit Sapporo Some might consider it sacrilege to visit Sapporo without sampling a pint or two of its namesake beer. And you can do just that—along with food from one of five restaurants—at the famous [Sapporo Beer Garden](https://www.sapporobeer.jp/english/brewery/s_museum/?ref=uchijapan), located right next door to the brand's original brewery. Inside this charming, ivy-clad building, you'll find multiple spots offering the local speciality of jingisukan—a type of lamb barbecue, also known as Genghis Khan, which you'll cook at your table over a helmet-shaped grill. You can also dine on this—sans the smoke, thanks to special cookers—and more refined fare at the Garden Grill. Personally, we like the bustling, beer hall vibes of the former, which have the added appeal of an all-you-can-drink option.

## Semina

![Semina20170519 1506243035 1610805793556536836 5478104911](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/semina20170519_1506243035_1610805793556536836_5478104911.jpg) Image: Little ravioli at Semina / @semina20170519 Wanna gorge yourself on homemade cheese and handcrafted pasta? We're gonna assume that hell yes, you do. Enter [Semina](https://semina-sapporo.com/en?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=mm&utm_content=hp), a cosy little eatery in the city centre where chef/owner Toshifumi Tanaka (who, FYI, honed his craft in Northern Italy) spins plates of Italian cuisine crafted with Hokkaido ingredients. In fact, such is Tanaka's dedication to local ingredients, growers, and the overall farm-to-table cause, it's even referenced in the restaurant's name (semina means 'sowing' in Italian). Expect hearty, beautifully plated dishes like Okoppe-milk mozzarella, butter confit burdock root, rice-koji risotto, spaghetti with bottarga (cured fish roe), and roasted Ezo venison. Our non-negotiable? A glass of Northern Italian wine, to go with.

## Noa Hakobune

![Noa hakobune06 2](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/noa_hakobune06_2.jpg) Main article image: Seafood is in ample supply at Noa Hakobune. Above: Expect impeccable service / both @noa\_hakobune06 You'll wanna visit this one as much for the building as for the food. Styled from stone in the manner of Noah's ark (that's [Noa Hakobune](https://noa-hakobune.com/), translated) by leading British architect, Nigel Coates—complete with murals inspired by this and other historical stories, adorning the interior—it's both weird and wonderful, and we're here for it. Once you've boarded said 'boat', it's time to feast—seafood, one of the hallmarks of Sapporo cuisine, is top of the list here. Pick from aptly-named set menus including the Tide Course, Fishing Light Course, and Bountiful Catch Course; pumped full of provincial delicacies like scallops, rockfish, and crab of the day, cooked in a blaze of (chargrilled) glory, right at your table. Epic.

## Sushi Miyakawa

![Sushi Miyakawa](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/Sushi-Miyakawa.jpg) Image: Sushi gets a fancy upgrade at Sushi Miyakawa / Michelin Guide In the Western world, the words “sushi' and “chic” generally don't go together, but here in Sapporo, that couldn't be further from the truth. That's certainly the case at [Sushi Miyakawa](https://www.sushi-miyakawa.com/), anyway, where the immaculate fit-out—centred around an eight-seater counter, inlaid with persimmon-wood leaves—is giving unapologetically upmarket vibes. Aesthetics aside, this spot is home to some of the city's best sushi courtesy of chef/owner Maasaki Miyakawa, who combines his lifelong passion for the cuisine with Hokkaido's finest seafood, amongst other ingredients (he also has another two sushi restaurants, one in Niseko and one in Macau). It should come as little surprise to learn that Sushi Miyakawa once earned the highest possible Michelin star rating (the only sushi restaurant in Hokkaido, and just one of a handful in Japan, to do so).

## Suginome

![Suginome susukino](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/suginome_susukino.jpg) Image: Guests are greeted at the door at Suginome / @suginome\_susukino If you're in the mood for some of Sapporo's legendary seafood, [Suginome](https://suginome.jp/english) is where you'll find it. This restaurant has been reeling in diners for more than 70 years, thanks in large part to its signature crab dishes (including a behemoth, 1kg-plus Angelhair variety) and salmon hot pot, made with ingredients fresh from the surrounding seas. You'll dine on these as part of a kaiseki or multi-course menu inside a charming stone warehouse, circa 1915, complete with Ainu-inspired details that extend right down to the serveware (Ainu being the indigenous people of Hokkaido).

## Nukumi

![Nihonryori nukumi](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/nihonryori_nukumi.jpg) Image: Glazed shrimp covered in noodles and fried at Nukumi / @nihonryori\_nukumi There's something incredibly special about this spot perched on the edge of Nakajimia Park, and we're not the only ones who think so—[Nukumi](https://nukumi.com/index1.html) is yet another of Sapporo's restaurants to receive multiple Michelin stars. Expect carefully selected Japanese ingredients (pufferfish, even!) crafted into immaculate, degustation-style dishes by chef/owner Maki Yamamoto, who fine-tuned his culinary skills as official chef for the Japanese Consul General in Hong Kong. Adding to the exclusivity of this spot is its intimate (read:tiny) dining room on the building's second floor, with breathtaking views of the park beyond. Impressive.

## Gyokusuien

![Gyokusuien sapporo](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/gyokusuien_sapporo.jpg) Image: Gyokusuien's viral Yukimoe Parfait / @gyokusuien\_sapporo An almost 100-year-old tea shop (not a restaurant, we know) is where you'll find one of the best examples of another local delicacy—ice cream. Here it comes in the form of the Yukimoe Parfait, a unique treat featuring layers of velvety matcha and Hokkaido milk soft-serve atop a red bean and roasted brown rice base, piled high inside a matcha-spiked waffle cone (now that's what we call a mouthful). Crafted to represent the changing seasons (i.e. the milk ice cream symbolising snow, and the matcha the greenery that follows) this has become the signature treat at [Gyokusuien](https://gyokusuien.co.jp/) and has grown its social media following into the thousands. Do try it.

## Ramen Alley

![Ramen Alley Sapporo cakeswithfaces](https://d1g90p0r985xbs.cloudfront.net/general/_1280xAUTO_fit_center-center_82_none/Ramen-Alley-Sapporo_cakeswithfaces.jpg) Image: Famous Ramen Alley Sapporo is definitely worth a visit or three / @cakeswithfaces And finally, no guide to eating out in Sapporo would be complete without mentioning the city's signature miso ramen. In fact, such is the importance of this local specialty that there's an entire street of restaurants dedicated to it. [Ramen Alley](https://www.ganso-yokocho.com/?ref=uchijapan) is one of the area's most famous foodie attractions, dishing up a plethora of slurp-worthy spots in the Susukino district, each with their own, unique take on this beloved local dish. Navigate the lanterns and neon signage to your choice of 17 eateries, including the highly-rated [Sapporo Ramen Hakura](https://www.ramenharuka.com/) with its miso cheese ramen, and [Aji No Karyu](https://www.ganso-yokocho.com/shop_list/karyu/?ref=uchijapan), the shop that was once featured by culinary royalty Anthony Bourdain in his TV series, No Reservations.
