Qantas is set to expand its seasonal Sydney-Sapporo service for the 2026/27 winter, adding more capacity to a route that has quickly become one of the more important air links for Hokkaido’s snow season.

The airline says flights will increase from an average of three services per week to as many as five weekly during peak periods, representing a capacity increase of more than 50 per cent compared with the inaugural season. In total, that will add more than 10,000 extra seats, taking the route to nearly 35,000 seats for the season.

For Hokkaido’s resort markets, the significance goes beyond aviation. Easier direct access from Sydney strengthens one of Niseko’s most important international visitor pipelines and underlines how central the Australian market has become to the region’s winter economy.

Qantas launched the direct Sydney-Sapporo service in December 2025, creating the only non-stop connection between the two cities. The route trims several hours off the journey compared with one-stop alternatives and makes same-day access to resort areas far more realistic, including Niseko, Furano and Rusutsu.

That matters not only for holidaymakers, but also for the wider resort property story. Better flight connectivity tends to reinforce confidence in destinations that rely on seasonal international demand. In the case of Niseko and the broader Hokkaido market, direct services from major gateway cities help support everything from hotel occupancy and retail spending to the longer-term appeal of second homes, managed apartments and tourism-led development.

The expansion also comes against the backdrop of continued growth in Australian travel to Japan. According to figures cited by Qantas from the Japan National Tourism Organisation, more than one million Australians visited Japan in 2025, up 15 per cent year on year. That is a sizeable number, and one that helps explain why airlines are now willing to commit more seats to winter-focused routes beyond Tokyo and Osaka.

For Niseko, Furano and Rusutsu in particular, the additional flights are another sign that the resorts are continuing to mature as international destinations. The market is no longer simply reliant on fragmented one-stop access and specialist ski travellers planning well in advance. As flight options improve, the region becomes easier to reach for a broader range of visitors, including families, repeat winter guests and buyers making inspection trips tied to property searches.

It also reflects a wider shift in how Japan is being sold abroad. Hokkaido is no longer just an add-on for experienced skiers. Increasingly, it is being marketed as a front-door destination in its own right, with Sapporo serving as both an urban arrival point and a practical gateway to the island’s major snow regions.

The route expansion is another positive signal for the resort sector. Infrastructure is not only about lifts, roads and station upgrades on the ground. Air access plays a major role too—and more capacity from Sydney should help keep Hokkaido firmly in view for one of its most valuable overseas audiences.
